A creative dish from a popular izakaya restaurant that is suitable for eating after drinking.
Unagi-no-sanen-mushi (500 yen) is served as a dish to eat after drinking by the izakaya, which specializes in the island’s cuisine and is popular among locals. It is domestically produced eel and rice with a specially made sugar and soy sauce steamed with shell flower leaves (sanen in Amami dialect). This flavorful item with the soft aroma of the shell flower, a relative of ginger, matches well with the muscovado shochu spirits served at the restaurant!
Among the wide selection of muscovado shochu, the kamejikomi(500 yen) (brewed in earthenware pots) type is recommended. Two brands served at the restaurant: Ryugufrom Tomita brewery andNagakumofrom Yamada brewery.
Toshihisa Sakae, the owner. He loves the paintings of Isson Tanaka, a representative artist from the island, and he named his restaurant Isson when he opened it in 1963.
He is a music fan, and the walls and ceilings are decorated with posters and other memorabilia of his favorite artists. Islanders gather and drink together at this heart-warming place.
